How to add an AI chatbot to your Shopify store

In short: To add an AI chatbot to a Shopify store, first tidy up your FAQ, shipping and return policies, then build a knowledge base in Puhera and connect your Shopify store through an MCP connection. Embed the bot in your storefront with a script, test it with real shopper questions, and after launch measure the conversions the chatbot drives. No coding is required.

Why does a Shopify store need an AI chatbot?

Your Shopify store gets visits at midnight, but your team can't be online every hour. When a shopper can't quickly find an answer about sizing, delivery time or returns, they may abandon the cart and leave.

An AI chatbot fills that gap. It answers from your store's own information, recommends products and hands the conversation to your team when needed. Your people spend less time on repeat questions and more on the conversations that need a human.

If the basics are new to you, start with what is an e-commerce chatbot.

Step 1: What content should you prepare before setup?

Nothing shapes your chatbot's quality more than the content you give it. For a Shopify store, prepare three groups:

FAQ and support answers

  • List the questions that show up most in your support inbox.
  • Write a short, unambiguous answer for each one.
  • Make sure different pages don't give different answers to the same question.

Policy pages

  • Shipping times and costs, plus any free-shipping threshold.
  • Return and exchange windows, and who pays for return shipping.
  • Payment options and installment terms, if you offer them.
  • Whether you ship internationally.

Product data

  • Complete product descriptions: materials, dimensions, usage and care.
  • Size charts and fit notes.
  • Variant names written the way shoppers would understand them.

You'll find a detailed checklist in how to build a chatbot knowledge base.

Step 2: How do you build the knowledge base?

After creating a chatbot in Puhera, you add its knowledge sources:

  1. Website crawl: enter your store's address and Puhera crawls the pages automatically.
  2. Files: upload documents that aren't on your site, such as a sizing guide, care instructions or campaign terms, as PDF, Word, PowerPoint or text files.
  3. FAQ: add the questions and answers you prepared.
  4. Product catalog: if your store produces a Google Merchant feed, the catalog can be synced from that feed.

Puhera shows which source it used in every answer. When you spot a wrong answer during testing, you can immediately see which piece of content is behind it.

Step 3: How do you connect your Shopify store through MCP?

MCP (Model Context Protocol) is a protocol that gives AI assistants a standard way to connect to external data sources and tools. Puhera connects to Shopify through MCP. For a deeper explanation, read what is MCP.

At a high level, the connection works like this:

  1. Choose the Shopify integration in your Puhera panel.
  2. Connect your store and authorize access.
  3. Decide which actions the bot may take, for example product recommendations and order lookup.

Shopify and the other e-commerce integrations are included in the Pro and Enterprise plans. See the Shopify integration page for details.

How do you set the bot's behavior and flows?

The knowledge base defines what the bot knows; the directive defines how it behaves. You can start from one of Puhera's ready-made directive (persona) templates, such as a product sales advisor, and adapt it to your store's voice. This is where you describe whether the bot sounds friendly or formal, which topics it stays away from and what it does when it isn't sure.

Then use the visual automation canvas to build flows for common situations. A few examples:

  • Keyword trigger: when a message mentions "return", show quick-reply buttons for "Return policy" and "Request an exchange".
  • Intent trigger: when a shopper wants to talk to a person, connect the conversation to a live agent.
  • Wholesale inquiries: when someone asks about bulk orders, show a lead capture form and send your team an email.

See how agent handoff works on the live chat handoff page.

Step 4: How do you embed the chatbot in your store?

Before launch, make the bot look and sound like your brand: logo, avatar, colors, corner radius, tone, welcome message and embed icon. A welcome message that briefly says what the bot can help with nudges shoppers toward the right questions.

Next, add the embed script Puhera gives you to your Shopify theme. There's no coding involved; you paste a ready-made script into the right place in your theme. You can also share the bot through a public link.

For security, use domain restriction and embed-origin protection so the bot only runs on domains you approve.

Step 5: Which questions should you test before launch?

Test the bot in preview the way a real shopper would. A good test list includes:

  • "How many days will delivery take?" and "Is shipping free?"
  • "Can I return this, and do I pay for return shipping?"
  • "Does this dress run true to size or should I size up?"
  • "I have a set budget. What would you suggest as a gift?"
  • "Where is my order?"
  • Ask about a product you don't sell: the bot should say it doesn't know instead of making something up.
  • Write a complaint: the bot should offer to hand you to an agent.

Check the source shown with each answer. If an answer is wrong or out of date, fix the content first and then test again.

If you get visitors from abroad, try the same questions in another language too; Puhera can answer in different languages with AI. It also helps to test together with your support team rather than alone: they know how customers actually phrase things and will quickly try wording you wouldn't think of.

Step 6: What should you measure after launch?

Launch isn't the finish line. Review these regularly:

  • Unanswered questions: they reveal gaps in your knowledge base.
  • Handed-off conversations: they show which topics still need a person.
  • Conversion funnel: product view, add to cart, checkout and purchase.
  • Chatbot-attributed revenue: sales of products the bot recommended.

Puhera measures purchases of AI-recommended products with a SKU-based attribution model and offers summary, funnel and top-product reports. We explain the approach in measuring chatbot revenue and conversions.

What does Puhera offer Shopify stores?

  • A knowledge base with cited answers, built from website crawling, file uploads, an FAQ and catalog sync from a Google Merchant feed.
  • A Shopify connection through MCP for product recommendations, order lookup and similar actions.
  • Automations triggered by intent, keyword or every conversation: lead forms, emails, quick-reply buttons, webhooks and connecting to a live agent.
  • Live support with a priority queue, where agents see the bot transcript before taking over.
  • Conversion and revenue reports that show chatbot-attributed revenue.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a developer to add a chatbot to Shopify?

No. Puhera requires no code: you build the knowledge base in the panel, connect your store and add the ready-made embed script to your theme.

Which plan includes the Shopify integration?

E-commerce integrations such as Shopify, WooCommerce and T-Soft, along with MCP integrations, are included in the Pro and Enterprise plans. On the Starter plan you can begin with a knowledge base and a public link.

Where does the chatbot get product prices and stock from?

Product information reaches the knowledge base through a Google Merchant feed sync or a website crawl, and the Shopify MCP connection supports actions such as product recommendations. The bot shows which source it used in its answers.
